Sugar Maple tree Leaves

3 Ways to Know Your Trees: The Sugar Maple

Hi if you’re new here and you have no idea about what kind of trees you have in your yard, this is the place for you! Today we’re going to be looking at the Acer saccharum, otherwise known the sugar maple which is one of the biggest and most important trees of the hardwoods.

  1. Leaves

A sugar maple tree has a specific look to it’s leaves. It might seem obvious about the sugar maple’s leaves because you’ve seen them everywhere. The canadian flag is just one example of the iconic maple leaf, specifically the sugar maple leaf. This leaf is symmetrical with it’s leaves extending outward into five major sections and two minor sections that protrude out from the stem.

2. Bark

Now a sugar maple’s bark can change depending on how old the tree is. Just like a person we tend to get wrinkly as we age. So just as a baby that has nice smooth skin so does a less mature sugar maple. This image below is of young sugar maple’s bark.

The image below this is of sugar maple’s bark that is of a more mature sugar maple.

One thing when it comes to identifying trees is that they change over time just like us. (:

3. Seeds

We’ve all seen them dotting the landscape of our more natural environments but sometimes you see them on the sidewalks or in parking lots, or perhaps even on top of your car. You’d likely have heard of them as helicopters! All maple trees have these “winged” seeds.

Do you have any of these trees in your yard? Do you might have an issue with one of them and you notice it might need a trim?? Give us a call!
